The Compassion of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Gentleman I Had Just Met Assisted Me Secure the Position That Changed My Life

During the closing decade of the 80s, I was beginning a low-cost journey to Europe with a companion. Since my travel mate was considering enrolling in graduate studies in New York, we had arranged a two-week stay there on the way to London.

We got to the graduate housing, a large ten-floor structure on the UWS known as International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the canteen, where we got some food, found a table, and started talking to fellow residents.

Adjacent to my seat was an individual of Iraqi origin pursuing an engineering degree at a prestigious New York university. He wanted to know what I my profession was, and I explained that I had newly finished with a degree in science and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at Columbia University – right next door to the engineering department, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He recommended that I ought to seek a role with them. I dismissed the idea, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I lacked a US visa.

The next day I toured the city, going back to the cafeteria that evening. The engineering student came up to me and let me know that he had arranged an interview for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Given that he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but immediately informed my interviewer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a metropolis where opportunities abound – she said: “That can be arranged. What's your start date?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I held that position for three years. An advantage of the role was that I also received no-cost classes at Columbia, and I took advantage to finish a graduate degree in global studies.

I lost touch with him and I don’t even know his full name, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in multiple respects. I lacked the courage or self-assurance to approach someone at an elite institution and seek a position. And, I had long dreamed to take classes in another country, but lacked the financial means without that free tuition.

What's more, that gig at Columbia resulted in a role in Europe where I encountered my handsome spouse from France, with whom I currently share four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger changed my trajectory in life, and I’m forever grateful.
