The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
