"When are you speaking to the band?" a message pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."
However, there remains one problem: I also desires to be the Haims' additional sibling. What's more, we are not alone. Multiple famous admirers have publicly coveted the position.
The evidence suggests an irresistible appeal is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their path playing gigs at small eateries with their family. Today, they are multi-time Grammy Award hopefuls.
Like all the most iconic bands, they're a tight-knit gang. Their visuals repeatedly show them marching in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such pure exuberance you can't help but think, "I want to be a piece of that, too."
"The numerous instances on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a bass'," says Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That is the ultimate honour. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can inspire young girls to make music."
"So all are welcome to be the next Haim sister."
Historic Milestone
The band are speaking from their homes, where they're recovering after an major tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.
They're right now reeling from the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in contention for the trophy.
"I follow the lists every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I hallucinating'?"
The importance of the accolade resonates with the band.
"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant achievement," continues Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the pioneers that paved the way."
Heartbreak and Laughter
The project emerged from a period of transition. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that unique liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to start anew.
The words detail departures and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real life who they want to be.
"That's a perfect description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a personal statement. You have to make an effort in shutting out the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."
Development of Music
That recent resilience demanded a different sonic direction – more organic and immediate than anything the band had done before.
For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the drums.
"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I care so much about it," she states.
"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the right drum sound."
Experiences and Shared Laughter
The trio's openness shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic misadventures.
Someone left Este over a medical consideration. Alana recalled a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.
"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."
An Assured Path
You can clearly sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their position in the industry.
They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide following.
Yet the band will forever be their top commitment.
"We have been performing since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "There is nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still making music."
